The global revenues from telecom services will grow from 1,174 billion EUR in 2015 to 1,293 billion EUR in 2020

With revenues from mobile services as principal growth engine, which will grow by 14% between 2015 and 2020 (+2.8% per year on average), and reaching 814 billion EUR in 2020.


With global penetration more than 100% in 2014, subscriber growth is expected to gradually slow down over the next few years. The number of fixed Internet subscribers is increasing at roughly the same pace, but customer numbers are eight times smaller. The one billion mark is not expected to be reached before 2020 and traditional landlines continue to loose ground as VoIP and mobile gain ground.


The spread of broadband

the number of fixed broadband subscribers is expected to reach 1 billion worldwide by the end of 2019. The number of LTE customers is shooting up, with services based on carrier aggregation no longer being limited to just the more developed countries.
Three major factors will play in favour of the spread of broadband:

The success of bundled offers (fixed telephony, VoIP, TV, mobile telephony) and the appetite for video applications.

The investment of telecom operators in the migration of their infrastructures to mobile or fixed broadband.

The comfort provided by ultra-fast mobile broadband and the new uses it enables.

Revenue from telecom services

The global revenues from telecom services will grow from 1,174 billion EUR in 2015 to 1,293 billion EUR in 2020, representing an average annual growth of 2.0%.

• Revenues from mobile services will grow by 14% between 2015 and 2020 (+2.8% per year on average), reaching 814 billion EUR in 2020.

• Revenues associated with data transmission and Internet will grow more strongly (+21% between 2015 and 2020, i.e. +4.3% per year on average), to reach 344 billion EUR in 2020.

Revenues from fixed telephony will continue to decline significantly (-23% between 2015 and 2020, i.e. a decline of 4.6% per year on average), to be at 135 billion EUR in 2020..

Disparate performances from operators in emerging countries

Top telcos in emerging countries continue to suffer from a sudden halt in value growth. China’s three operators in particular have seen virtually no progress: China Unicom actually reported a 3% drop in revenue. Their margins are come in line with industry standards: between 30% and 40% of EBITDA margins.
Several of these operators are actively engaged in an international expansion into Africa and Latin America, but also into advanced markets, particularly in Europe.

European operators starting incrementally to get back on track

Telcos in Europe are back on a growth path. If most of the top carriers are still reporting decreasing revenue, some are seeing an increase, notably Deutsche Telekom, Telenor and to a lesser extent Orange, thanks to their international operations. Their spending on LTE and superfast fixed access networks (FTTx) has not yet paid off and helped to bolster ARPU.

Choosing the theme for the 2016 DigiWorld Summit came about quite naturally. The vast majority of IDATE DigiWorld were eager to tackle the topic of trust.
For some time now, trust has been recognised as a vital ingredient in the success of a brand, an economy or a society. This is all the more true in a world being transformed by digital innovation. In its scenarios for 2025, IDATE DigiWorld underscored that trust was one of the key variables in tomorrow’s digital ecosystem. To shore up this belief, we need only look at some recent headlines:

•    the cyberattacks against telcos, TV networks and government agencies,
•    the legal wrangles between Apple and WhatsApp and government authorities wanting access to the encryption key for the devices or messages;
    the very drawn out European Union negotiations over new data protection rules;
•     the end of the Safe Harbor transatlantic agreement and ensuing debates over the new Privacy Shield;
    questions over the dangers surrounding connected/driverless cars, and the growing ubiquity of the IoT in general;
    the ad–blocking phenomenon;
    questions over what impact multiple FinTech solutions will have on the soundness of the banking system, and blockchain’s ability to replace today’s trusted third parties;
So trust is a focal point for telcos, cloud computing companies, Internet giants, start–ups, governments and regulators, but also for every economic sector across the board, not to mention consumers and citizens.
And, as always, acknowledging risk must not prevent us from also analysing opportunities, in terms of innovation, differentiation strategies and the competitive advantages available to many market players.

Once again this year, the vital meeting place that this international conference has become, will include plenary sessions that will provide a springboard for a series of high–level specialty forums.  These forums are an opportunity to delve deeper into the main trends we expect to see in mobile networks with the advent of 5G, ultrafast broadband, the Internet of Things, the TV market’s transformation in Europe, FinTech, video games, the digital promise in Africa and what makes a smart city.

Digital First: ICT players vs. the new disrupters


The place to be in Europe, to understand upcoming disruptions and their impact on telecom, IT, Internet and media markets

From 17 to 19 November 2015, the 37th annual DigiWorld Summit will bring together 150 top-tier speakers to Montpellier to share their views with the more than 1,200 participants from over 30 countries. IoT : The Internet of Things

Connected objects were everywhere and IoT is now becoming the Internet of everything.

Connected cars

Connected cars attracted a lot of attention with connected vehicles on most of equipment manufacturers’ and MNOs’ booths.
Renault’s CEO made a keynote where he presented the timetable for assisted driving. According to Mr. Carlos Ghosn, despite their numerous initiatives and some acquisition rumours, Internet giants are not rivals to car manufacturers but allies, as they consider electric cars and they help car makers to promote electric cars.
Ford had even its own booth presenting the electric vehicles (both passenger and entreprise cars) with dedicated solutions. In the meantime, Vodafone presented a Porsche Panamera model equipped with its new Telematics solution since the Cobra acquisition.

Smart home

Smart is also getting traction in the IoT space. In the “innovation city” hall (space dedicated to the connected objects), through the connectedhouseAT&T offering (Digital life) where the home could control through the smartphone and even through the connected car (equipped with an AT&T SIM card). When approaching the home, the car can trigger the opening of gate by itself for instance (pre-programmed distance).


Several watches and smart objects were also present on the different booths. Only AT&T provides cellular connected wearable on its booth, including the TIMEX and Samsung Gear S.

Alternative technologies

While 5G is already in the tracks, very low throughput network technologies are also under the spotlights. After the recent release of its 100 MEUR fundraising campaign among telecom operators, Sigfox was also on everyone’s lips at the MWC. Among the main new shareholders, Telefonica confirmed its strategic investment and its willingness to integrate the technology into its portfolio to address additional verticals and applications.


The GMA (Global M2M Association) also announced a strategic collaboration with Gemalto and Ericsson to provide a Multi-Domestic Service based on a single SIM (using the eUICC technology) helping global enterprises (chiefly from the automotive and consumer electronics segments) capitalize on the growth of connected devices.

Growing market but still key challenges though

During his keynote, if AT&T Wireless CEO predicted that the smart phone will be the remote control of everything in the next few years, he also pointed out the key challenges to address in order to make the IoT market grow significantly:
•    Security
•    Privacy concerns
•    Effortless (ease of use)


privacylogoData about devices and their users is generated in real-time, often by default and without the user being aware or having choice (especially for free apps). There is a need for a different approach to giving users transparency, choice and control over their data and privacy.

Generally user has a single choice : accept or not using the service, there should be gradual approach (like sharing some id attributes but not all of them).
Privacy could be a competitive stick for service providers, as users are becoming more aware of privacy.

Facebook in emerging countries

fbFacebook has launched Facebook zero in partnership with mobile operators (Millicom, Telenor, Airtel): data use is free for a limited period, and after that operators can charge data.

•    Airtel: “Operators and Facebook are like the beauty and the beast, but the beast (facebook) is becoming more human nowadays”.  Airtel was reluctant to introduce Facebook because of VoIP threat. Is looking at it like the “boiling milk”.
•    Millicom, Telenor: have seen ARPU rise thanks to facebook launching, very promising for them.
•    Wikipedia has the same approach of “Wikipedia zero”, dealing with operator to provide data access for free.

Financial inclusion

Banks, such as Master Card, provide a global and interoperable solutions. Those systems needs public-private partnerships. Hong Leong Islamic Bank Berhad has launched a solution in Malaysia.

In 2015, the key words of the Mobile World Congress were 5G, IoT, virtualization and LTE-U : PART 1

As for each edition, IDATE has been Analyst partner of the Mobile World Congress. A fantastic opportunity for our analysts and experts to interview many professionals coming from their Mobile planet to Barcelona for this intense and tremendous week.

5G Concept

Even though the concept of 5G is still very much under discussion (videos from KT, Huawei presented during conferences), NGMN (next generation mobile networks) Alliance published its 5G white paper which can be seen as the mobile operators “wish list” for 5G. Nonetheless, 5G is scheduled for 2020. Early trials should arrive in 2018, with projects scheduled for the Winter Olympic games in South Korea (4G became real in 2010’s, 3G in 2000’s). Key advantages of 5G over 4G would be a much lower latency (1ms compared to 40 ms in 4G and 100 ms with 3G), the capacity to connect billions of devices, faster response that will boost services like augmented reality, self driving cars and online gaming. Huawei mentioned that 5G should reach 10 Gbps (7 minutes to download a movie with 4G, 6 s with 5G).

5G should better take into account specific requests of vertical markets (healthcare, automotive, energy, government, city management, manufacturing and public transportation) and better manage the Internet of Things.

Equipment suppliers showed first demos of 5G air interface using millimetric bands (70 GHz - Nokia) and 15 GHz (Ericsson). New air interface techniques were proposed by Huawei with the non-orthogonal access technology based on Sparse Code Multiple Access (SCMA), and Filtered-Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (F-OFDM).

With tvisuel principal idate MWC v2he 5GPPP (Public Private Partnership), Europe is trying to accelerate developments of 5G with fundings of €700 million for R&D. It is expected that the industry will invest five times this amount. According to the 5GPPP, 5G should be based upon a HetNet (heterogeneous network) supporting various radio access technologies and frequency bands ranging from sub-1 GHz bands to 100 GHz. Various traffic profiles will have to be supported:


•    Low speed-low energy for IoT sensors
•    High speeds for video services
•    Very low latency profile for mission critical services such as PPDR (Public Protection and Disaster Relief) and for transportation issues

Google will soon become a MVNO

Google confirmed during the MWC that the group is negotiating MVNO agreements with the US mobile operators. Light details on Google plans so far. Further information scheduled for months to come. Nova is not expected to compete directly against US MNOs. In addition, Google do not want to launch a network at scale.
The Google MVNO will only work with the Nexus6. “The focus of Google’s network could be on connecting devices other than phones, as watches, cars and other devices increasingly will include mobile connectivity features”.Mobile Identity

Different methods of identification and authentication, each suited to particular transaction types (from access to social network to official ID) ; biometric authentication as a new solution.
•    Digital identity card exists in Estonia (with digital authentication), biometric card exists in middle east and Africa (Algeria, South Africa)
•    Mobile authentication is a challenge for mobile operators, but the market is far from mass-market: demand is not ready for official ID authentication on mobile, standards are needed, as well as regulation.Mobile Id could be a leapfrog technology in emerging countries where people don’t even have identity papers, and have a mobile phone.
If mobile operators don’t manage to be positioned on this market, banks or social networks could.


PICTO VIRTUANetwork Function Virtualization (NFV) appeared last year during MWC and is now close to commercial implementation by mobile operators. Telefonica demonstrated a full network together with ALU and HP. It will integrate a vRAN, vCDN, vEPC and vIMS.
A first implementation of vRAN was presented by China Mobile which is collaborating with Alcatel-Lucent and Intel on Cloud-RAN, which is seen as a first step towards virtual RAN. NTT Docomo is working with NEC on virtualization of the core network (EPC).


LTELOGO2LTE-U technology is important and was present on many vendors’ booths. It will give free access to additional spectrum in the 5 GHz band currently used by Wifi. This will provide SDL (supplementary downlink) capability, providing extra capacity for downlink traffic, especially video. LBT (Listen Before Talk), the specific function which will allow smooth compatibility between Wifi and LTE in the 5 GHz band will be included in 3GPP Release 13 expected to be adopted in Q3 2016.
LTE and Wifi carriers can also be combined in order to provide higher throughputs but in that case, the benefits of LTE higher spectrum efficiency are not present.

For single aisle, short-haul planes, IDATE believes that in the short term – i.e. up to 2016 – the market will remain very marginal in terms of connected aircraft, as the shortness of the flights (90 minutes on average) will keep airlines from investing too heavily in the segment.


Towards hybrid inflight connectivity?
The high cost of equipping airplanes for in-flight connectivity is proving a major obstacle to the systems’ technical progress. Airlines are nevertheless exploring various avenues with their high-speed access providers.

Ku-band based solutions are thus likely to continue to play a substantial role, especially at sea (due to a lack of Ka-band coverage) and because of the advantages they offer for TV programme reception. The Ka-band is nonetheless expected to start to make real strides in 2015, thanks in particular to the launch of global systems like Inmarsat GX and, further down the road, the gradual rollout of the Ka-band alliance whose members include ViaSat, Eutelsat, NBN Co., Yahsat and Telesat.

As a result, for all transoceanic and transcontinental flights, LTE is not likely to prove a major threat to satellite which will continue to be the technology of choice for providing passengers with in-flight access.

It is more probable that an ATG/LTE type solution will be adopted to provide users with in-flight connectivity on this type of aircraft, provided upcoming regulatory decisions on spectrum allocations allow.

As for trips over landfield, LTE is to take the lead, aircrafts devoted to international trips are likely to be equipped with hybrid mobile/satellite systems in a near future. Gogo in the USA is currently the most innovative vendor in the area of hybrid devices. A few months back it announced that it would be rolling out its GTO (Ground to Orbit) solution in Q3 2014, using a hybrid antenna developed by an American equipment manufacturer called ThinKom. Gogo has been innovative in the sense that, even if the system still uses two antennae – one air to ground (ATG) and one to the sky (satellite), the operator has designed the most integrated dish possible, with a single box that hands over automatically between ATG and satellite signals. With the coming launch of dedicated global systems in the Ka-band, IDATE anticipates future hybridization strategies between both ATG and Ku/Ka satellite bands.

Telstra and AT&T launch LTE-based inflight-connectivity solutions

May 2014 has been an interesting month for the inflight connectivity market: Both AT&T and Telstra announced plans to launch LTE-based inflight connectivity solutions using an air-to-ground architecture. Historically based on satellite, the inflight-connectivity market is being increasingly challenged by terrestrial projects using ATG architectures. The first player to introduce such a solution on the market was Gogo in the USA several years ago. Thanks to pioneering this market, Gogo was able to grab a significant market share on the US market.

Besides the latest plans announced by AT&T and Telstra, other players have expressed their interest for this market: Qualcomm in the USA, ZTE and Huawei in China, Deutsche Telekom and Alcatel-Lucent in Europe.

All these projects also raise the question of spectrum allocation. In Europe, the hunt for a suitable spectrum is still in discussion with the European Commission. In the USA, the spectrum bands have been found but led to a struggle between Qualcomm and the satellite operators community. In Asia too, strong uncertainties remain as to what spectrum will be used for such services.

Round-up for 2014

It’s hard, in the first editorial of the year, to avoid laying out the overriding themes that we expect to see play out over the next twelve months. But it is still too early for me to deliver a complete summary of the year gone by, which has become the much-anticipated task of our DigiWorld Yearbook.
You will also need to wait until the next Executive Note to find out the central topic selected for this year’s DigiWorld Summit (but you can already mark your calendars for November 18, 19 and 20).

What I can share with you, however, is our belief in the profound relevance of certain issues, by summarising three topics that we have chosen to explore in this year’s Collaborative Research Programme (CRP 2014). These are think tanks open to existing IDATE member companies and those wanting to join, who will work for close to a year with a dedicated team of our analysts on the following subjects:

Telecoms USA: model or counter-model?

Following thorough on the two projects carried out in Brussels in 2012 and 2013 on telcos’ new business models, and the new European policy options being considered, we will work to deepen our understanding of the specific points that explain the different directions being taken on either side of the Atlantic.

The internet of things: will everything be connected?

We are going to analyse the true potential of the internet of things, by taking account of the developments that need to occur in the technical environment, difficulties in generating income from both consumer objects and industry applications and, finally, governance and personal data ownership issues, with tie-ins to our 2013 think tank on personal data

What will tomorrow’s TV and video networks look like?

Here we are building on the 2013 Video as a Service think tank by exploring issues surrounding the future of television and video distribution networks, and by analysing long-term scenarios for the delivery of TV and video products, taking particular account of the cooperation and convergence between networks, i.e. hybridisation involving both fixed and cellular networks

Other topics may be added to the CRP. For instance, we are contemplating an ambitious project that aims to define what could be a comprehensive, metropolitan area-scale digital investment strategy, going beyond marketing clichés and segmented vertical approaches.

I can also tell you that the next issue of Communications & Strategies (DigiWorld Economic journal) will be published in March, and is shaping up to be a promising one. It will be devoted to scoring Europe’s telecommunications sector, and examining potentially clashing policies.
And, finally, a reminder that the best way to delve into the subjects that are consuming our teams is though the reports that we publish every month as part of our annual Market Research programme.

L'intervention publique est évidemment incontournable pour aménager en très haut débit les territoires. Le THD par la seule action du marché, n'impacte que les zones denses et moyennement denses. Les zones moins denses et rurales sont délaissées par les opérateurs privés, légitimement vu l'absence de rentabilité, accentuant ainsi la "fracture numérique".

Le déploiement des réseaux à très haut débit est une véritable source de croissance pour l'ensemble de l'économie avec à la clé la création de plusieurs milliers d'emplois. En ce sens, les acteurs publics ne peuvent être absents de ces infrastructures qui sont essentielles pour le 21ième siècle au même titre que l'ont été les réseaux d'électricité ou de transport pour le 20ième siècle.

Il s'agit en effet d'abord d'emplois directs pour construire et exploiter ces réseaux, avec des emplois non délocalisables. Mais au-delà des emplois directs, il s'agit aussi d'emplois indirects, du fait de l'accroissement de compétitivité issu de ces réseaux et qui va bénéficier à l'ensemble des filières économiques et du fait aussi des nouveaux services et usages du numérique qui vont se développer.

Les collectivités locales en France ont pris conscience des enjeux liés au THD pour leurs territoires. Les Schémas Directeurs Territoriaux d'Aménagement Numérique (SDTAN), portent désormais sur 98 départements, soit la quasi-totalité du territoire national. Ces SDTAN permettent une bonne articulation entre les déploiements privés ciblant les zones très denses ou moyennement denses et l'intervention publique centrée sur les zones peu denses.

More and more devices connected, more and more service providers, more and more content consumed… leading to more and more data traffic! In this seminar, experts, network equipment providers and operators have drawn on how the future Internet networks may look like through the analysis of the major emerging trends by 2025 : SDN (Software Defined Network), NFV (Network Function Virtualization), 5G, M2M (Machine to Machine) and Internet of Things have been at the center of discussions.

Introducing a new era of network infrastructure with SDN and network virtualization

The first round table provided hot discussions on SDN and NFV with speakers from telco, from network solutions and from network equipment manufacturer. These are the questions asked to the speakers:

When future network will be rolled out?

• Network is the next step in the virtualization trend following servers and storage. SDN and NFV require important changes, proof of concept, and trials before a roll out. Such steps require years.
• Moreover, as Ryan SHUTTLEWORTH from Verizon said “SDN and NFV are not mature technologies yet.” SDN is currently rolled out at the scale of a datacenter and not really at a telco network level.

What are the main drivers?

• Savings is the first obvious driver of such technologies, but generated new revenues are also an important benefit to consider. The agility and the simplification of operations are also strong promises of SDN.
• Besides, the ability to make a link between cloud services (virtualized servers) and the virtualized network should be an interesting benefit.

What is the impact on the ecosystem?

• On the supplier side, new suppliers are expected to come. Moreover, the elasticity of the infrastructures created by SDN and NFV can lead to new business models. It will also enable a new level of developers.
• In general, changes related to the implementation of these new networks will have to be managed internally by both equipment vendors and telcos. Those who manage correctly IT, network and cloud will be able to leverage a strong competitive advantage.

Another aspect has been introduced then, related to content distribution: the future of Content Delivery Networks, illustrated by Ahmet OZALP from Akamai. He presented 11 predictions for this future. Among these predictions:

• As traffic will grow exponentially, CDN should be used also more and more in order to reduce the overall traffic. In 2012, CDN traffic was 53% of all consumer traffic and should be up to 65% in 2017 according to Akamai.
• Connected devices will bring complexity to deliver services correctly: especially Connected TVs and Home consoles. All devices support various protocols and formats that has to be handled to deliver services.
• CDN architectures should evolve. In the future the content will be closer to the end-user, providing cache servers closer to the access network, as in the figure below from Akamai presentation.

• The cooperation between CDN and telcos will be stronger in the future in order to reduce the traffic. In addition, CDN should enhance OTT video quality, exceeding traditional TV quality level. CDN services should become more and more cost effective. In the end, CDN market will have a healthy growth.

The focus of this seminar then shift to Franck BOUETARD from Ericsson with a presentation of Marc Plaszczynski, from Thales Alenia Space.

• Regarding the evolution of satellites, Mr. Plaszczynski mentioned that “Satellite Systems have enhanced their broadcast capabilities with high-value, integrated, flexible and interactive new Satellite solutions”.
• In addition, Satellite systems are adapting to support efficiently the Future Internet Networks evolution with hybrid end-to-end Systems. Satellite systems have also made improvements a comprehensive set of skills and solutions to foresee the unforeseeable.

Franck BOUETARD from Ericsson then presented his view on drivers of the future networks and 5G. He especially mentioned the Metis Consortium, 29 partners led by Ericsson, looking to 5G for after 2020. There are 5 things to address as mentioned in the figure below. Drivers for future networks are mobility, video traffic, 50 billion connected devices, high speed access, Network cloud and QoS.

Tailoring future networks for the Internet of Things

Samuel Ropert from IDATE then introduced the second round table about Internet of Things :

• M2M is the first step of IoT. It is especially a combination of various value chains: electronic, telecom, computing, and machines themselves
• IDATE forecast; in 2017, M2M SIM cards represent
- 5,9% of all SIM cards (human and machine) worldwide
- 14% of all SIM cards in Europe
• BUT In 2017, M2M connectivity revenues represent
- 1.3% of mobile revenues worldwide

The main topics discussed during this round table are as followed:

Technologies Issues

• Regarding communication technologies, M2M players mentioned that they are focusing particularly on 2G, low energy equipment, low bandwidth, as low cost is fine for objects. 4G is 7 time more expensive than 2G. Working on special 4G for machines require standardization, expected for 2017-18. Use cases are also important. For cars for example, LTE may make sense, even if expensive. Another example is video surveillance that is expensive but 4G brings quality.
• Regarding security issues, wireless is secure. The issue is protecting user privacy. For instance cars: driving too fast, location … can be obtained through M2M, but how do we protect privacy? The EU is trying to tackle the problem, but it all comes down to privacy, how is it guaranteed?

Need for standardization?

• M2M is everything but standardized. A lot of use cases are emerging, but no standards. Gathering the right data is difficult, accurately, and analyzing it. It is not a problem of big (too much) data, but accuracy.
• There is maybe a need for hierarchy of objects for standardization. In the last 5 years: it has been pushed by regulation. Ehealth seems to be most promising growth.

What role will startups play?

• They can play active role in creating applications.

Nicolas Demassieux from Orange concluded the session with a longer perspective vision on future networks. He especially mentioned that SDN can be compared to PC computer architecture with hardware managed by software, managed by the user. More generally, the current concept of communication infrastructures will be transformed to services distributed across “device + Network + Cloud”.

Despite stiff competition, satellite still making strides thanks to emerging markets

Satellite is holding onto its position in the global TV broadcasting market when going up against terrestrial networks. At the end of 2012, it had a roughly 27% share of the market and rising steadily, in both free to air (FTA) broadcasting and pay-TV distribution. But the situation does differ from region to region. Satellite’s growth rate in the DTH (direct to home) and especially the pay-TV market has been tremendous in a great many emerging countries. It has become a prime purveyor of TV programming, and helped drive the rise of pay-TV in Eastern Europe, in Latin and in Africa/the Middle East.

Main evolutions of the Satellite TV market

  • Global demand for satellite broadcasting capacity is expected to increase by an average 4% a year between now and 2017. The market is forecast at close to €5.4 billion in 2017 – which translates into an average annual growth rate of around 3% for market revenue over the next four years.
  • The rise in demand for satellite broadcasting capacity is being driven chiefly by:
    • A thriving TV market in emerging regions, which means an increase in the number of TV channels on offer (SD and HD) and the rollout of new pay-TV packages – particularly national DTH plans;
    • The development across the board of high definition TV channels, both free to air and paid. HD channels are expected to account for 20% of all channels broadcast worldwide in 2017 – keeping in mind that SD/HD simulcasting is likely to continue on through 2013-2017. A total of more than 7,000 HD channels are expected to be available in 2017, compared to slightly less than 5,000 in 2013, of which close to 40% will be in North America;
    • The gradual development of ultra HD starting in 2015, with the launch of the first test channels, and later the rollout of the first UHD channels – primarily in developed markets, but also in the more advanced emerging regions. This will have an only minimal effect on demand for satellite broadcasting capacity from 2013 to 2017, but the new service will seriously drive up demand further down the road.
  • The following actions will help satellite operators boost their business:
    • Optimise satellite capacity to supply emerging regions, and possibly acquire local providers;
    • Lobby to promote the premium aspect of satellite broadcasting solutions;
    • Successfully integrate hybrid architectures and become a vital part of digital home solutions in developed regions. The challenge here will be to transition successfully from linear TV broadcasting, at which satellite excels, to the world of video on demand and interactivity – which means delivering value-added solutions for both media companies and viewers.
